What is concept in photography?

Conceptual photography is a type of photography that illustrates an idea. There have been illustrative photographs made since the medium’s invention, for example in the earliest staged photographs, such as Hippolyte Bayard’s Self Portrait as a Drowned Man (1840).

Hippolyte Bayard

He was a French photographer and pioneer in the history of photography. He invented his own process that produced direct positive paper prints in the camera and presented the world’s first public exhibition of photographs on 24 June 1839.

Bayard’s Self Portrait as a Drowned Man (1840)

Self-Portrait as Drowned Man is an Early Photography Photography and Paper Photographic Print created by Hippolyte Bayard in 1840. The image is in the Public Domain, and tagged Self-portraits and Death in Art. “The corpse which you see here is that of M. Bayard, inventor of the process that has just been shown to you.

Ronen Goldman

He is an artist and conceptual photographer, who was born in California but now currently lives in Israel. His conceptual photographs consists of him photographing his dreams, and often spends months planning and perfecting his idea before he begins the photographing process.

So for my Strategies / Concept Project, I’m going to use Ronen Goldman as an inspiration as I find his work very eye-catching as he captures in his Black and White photos a wide range of colours, tones and shadows. So I’m going to capture my photographs in colour and then edit them in the Photoshop software and change the filter to Black and White. So my aim is to catch the models in one place, but I can then move the lighting set up around the frame of the image and the backdrop is going to be the black back drop, as then I can then capture the soft and harsh light that is directed on the surface of the models face.

My objective of the photo shoot was to capture the light focused on the surface of the models’ face, I really like how the light darkens the other half of the models’ face as I find it really interesting, I also wanted to see if I can capture textures in the frame of the picture, I achieved that as the creases in the background give the image a unique feeling and particularly with the images.
